I had a cannula insertion done by a nurse in the ACU. I am a trained professional myself so I know about cannula insertion techniques.
I genuinely believe that there needs to be some sort of cannula retraining as I was left very upset and traumatised after the insertion.
At the start of the insertion the whole needle was inserted in one swoop movement, I was in absolute shock, I am not sure if this is the training provided but it was so upsetting. When there was no flashback the needle was pushed back and forth and around inside my arm and pulled back until there was flashback, it genuinely felt as though the nurse was pushing it round aimlessly in the hope it would go into the vein. With the plastic tube sitting halfway out of my arm the nurse taped it down, and flushed the cannula.
It was safe to say after I came around from the shock I realised I had a really painful hard lump on my arm where the flush was in my tissue rather than my vein. I was so upset after this experience.
