"The support from a nurse"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Endoscopy and day care

(as a service user),

I recently underwent a colonoscopy at FVRH. This was my first experience in undergoing such a procedure and was quite nervous.

A young nurse called Amy inserted a canula into my arm and could see how nervous I was. She engaged me in conversation, knowing I had been retired from work for some time and asked what I had worked at.

Before I knew it, we were talking about a number of things including my family, and we chatted about how young people manage in today's society.

By the time I was ready to go for my procedure she said to me good luck, smiled and waved. This young nurse's interpersonal and communication skills were exemplary and Amy should act as a a role model for nurses entering into the nursing profession.

Hi Finn372

I am so pleased to hear that although you were quite nervous about attending the Endoscopy unit for your procedure, you were given reassurance from one of our Health Care Support workers, I believe this would be Emmy. She is currently part of the Health Care supporters Academy.

As a unit we understand how nerve racking it can be with regards to the procedures and possible outcomes. Emmy has shown you such care and compassion of which I am extremely proud of being able to engage you in conversation whilst continuing to cannulate.

I will ensure that Emmy receives your lovely words, and the whole team too.

Best wishes to you and take care

Kind Regards

Michelle Gilbertson SCN Endoscopy unit
