"My Care saving my life."

About: Derriford Hospital / Accident and emergency Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Cancer Services

(as the patient),

I am woman in her 60s who had stage 4 non Hodgkin's lymphoma. I went to bed feeling a bit cold and tired, nothing new. I ended up that night with sepsis. I was blue lighted to Plymouth as it was the nearest hospital (I was staying in Cornwall for a few days). I don't remember anything but this is what my husband said. The doctor needed my information on my treatments for cancer but my husband couldn't tell him which chemo I was receiving. Time was of the utmost importance but Plymouth is apparently not computer compatible with the RD&E in Exeter. Fortunately my husband then remembered he had our laptop in the car so he collected the laptop, signed into My Care and the doctor used it for the next 2 hours to give me the correct medication. I am now fine, thank you My Care.

Dear Squathn87

Thank you for your feedback and I am sorry to hear you have been unwell recently. I am sure this must have been a frightening experience for you and I am glad to hear that your husband was able to use his laptop to get the information you needed.

Whilst Plymouth is currently not compatible I would like to reassure you that both Plymouth and Torbay will be using EPIC in the future. This collaboration will allow them to transform how they share information with our teams at Royal Devon and vice versa. More details can be found here: https://www.plymouthhospitals.nhs.uk/latest-news/a-joint-devon-electronic-patient-record-takes-an-epic-step-forward-8041/

I wish you a continued recovery and thank you again for taking the time to leave feedback.

Kind regards

Lisa

We are very pleased to hear that your recent episode of care for sepsis was handled well thanks to your husband’s quick thinking. We would like to reassure you that from June 2026, Plymouth, Exeter, and Torbay will be using a new electronic patient record system that will have a specific chemotherapy module to allow doctors and appropriately trained nurses to make decisions on what treatments to offer based on medications patients are currently receiving, no matter whereabouts in the Peninsula that patient’s ‘home hospital’ is. This will help each hospital improve the care it gives and is a clinically-led transformation programme, ensuring the programme is focused on what is right for the patients and staff across Devon.
