"My disabled daughters care in Majors 2"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter was admitted to the Majors 2 emergency department in April 2025 at about 2.30 pm. She is still there waiting to see a cardiologist for blood results regarding her Troponin levels and a report on a chest x- ray.

She is in a wheelchair as she has a condition called Friedrichs ataxia. Since being in hospital ( during 18 hours) she was not offered anything to eat or drink. Her carers have been with her and picked up food at 10 pm last night at their shift change.

My daughter has low blood pressure and is at risk of pressure sores. She did not get a bed until after midnight and has not been given a pressure mattress.

I tried to contact the Majors department but no one answered the phone. We still do not know when she will be able to come home.

This is not what I would call “care”. I know the staff are busy but I believe basic nursing care is not a luxury and has not been provided in any shape or form. This is not the first time she has been in with high Tropopin levels and Myocarditis.

The care the last time in Majors was just as bad, to the extent that the nurse who admitted her thought she was drunk as they hadn’t looked at her notes. The nurse threw a vomit bowl at her and walked off, My daughter is high risk of choking.

I work in the Emergency Department as a Sister. I support a team of nurses and doctors in delivering emergency care. I co-manage performance and conduct with the ED senior team in line with local and national policies. I believe that maintaining contact post attendance with our services users is really beneficial. Gaining your valuable feedback can help us create changes so we can deliver the best service we can.

Dear lillierty037

I am so sorry to hear of this poor experience. It sounds completely unacceptable. I am not in the department currently but could try and call the department on your behalf but I would need her details and I am not sure where your daughter is now. I would advise calling the patient experience team so you can have this addressed via a more convenient and formal route. I think using this route takes a bit longer and it may not produce the outcomes you may be hoping for.

I am so sorry as this is not the care we aim for and meeting the basics are the minimum standard you and yours should expect at an already stressful time in your life.

I hope her hospital stay improves. Please do get in touch if needed.

Kind regards

Robyn Jones
