I would like to share my thoughts on the care I received at the Day Surgery Unit at New Stobhill Hospital, Glasgow.
My surgery was routine and it all went according to plan. However my abiding memory was the very high standard of patient centred care I received. In turn this made me feel valued, respected and included.
Nurses:
- personal welcome to help settle me and inform of next steps
- open questions to assess my needs
- regular check-in with offers of water / blankets / warm socks and even heat pads as they though I was cold.
- explanation for delays
Anaesthetists:
- full explanation of procedure,
- opportunity to ask questions
- listened carefully, taking time to answer - great bedside manner (thanks Alex, Mhairi and Holly)
- active mitigation of previous discomfort to avoid recurrence.
More importantly, the staff worked as a team and I was struck by the mutual respect they had for each other, regardless of grade / position.
In summary, at a time when the NHS is challenged like never before, I felt privileged to have experienced such acts of human kindness in the Day Surgery Unit. They are a credit to their profession and I hope someone sees this and passes it on.
"Made me feel valued, respected and included"
