"My visit to the Macular clinic"

About: Mater Hospital / Macular Unit

(as a service user),

I recently visited the Macular clinic for a review . My last treatment plan of 6 injections once monthly was completed in January. I had noticed that my vision had deteriorated during the time that I had waited for my review so I phoned the clinic to ask about an appointment. A staff nurse phoned me back and offered me an appointment the following week. I was pleased but also annoyed that the progress made had taken a backward step as I waited for my review.

I was seen by the consultant after my imaging had been done and I spoke to them about my frustration at having to constantly get to phone the clinic to make sure I received my injections as agreed in my treatment plan . Also that my sight had deteriorated whilst I waited for my review . The consultant listened carefully to my concerns and acknowledged my frustration . They gave me an injection that day and an appointment for my next injection in 4 weeks' time .

The consultant was courteous , kind and understanding .

My experience that day was fantastic . Thank you

Dear piscesgx34,

I am sorry to hear that your vision deteriorated whilst awaiting a review at the Macular clinic. Unfortunately due to the backlog patients are having to wait longer for injections. Please be assured that the team are doing everything possible to ensure patients are seen in a timely manner which has involved working evenings and weekends. We are also expanding the space available at the Mater site to enable us to undertake more injections.

Thank you for your kind feedback re the consultant and your experience in the unit even with the issues you had mentioned previously.
