"My journey with MS"

About: Barnet Hospital / General medicine Barnet Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics Edgware Community Hospital / Neurological Rehabilitation Centre

(as the patient),

I came in January to build my strength and mobility as I have primary progressive MS which was diagnosed in 2008. I was here less than 24 hours and then became delirious with a UTI and sepsis and ended up in Barnet hospital. I can’t remember much of the first week and then I was in Barnet for almost 4 weeks. They kept my room for me at the NRC and I am very grateful, but I couldn’t walk at all. I was using a hoist with the nurses from the bed to the chair. I had a lower starting point unfortunately.

Since being back at the NRC and have had daily gym sessions. I fractured my left arm in October and in hospital they said I could use my left arm and initially I was but then I had an appointment with the fracture clinic and they said I had to keep it immobile. I wasn’t able to do as much as I would have liked which was a shame, but it’s just how things played out.

I then had another fracture clinic appointment and they said I could start using my arm which really helped with my gym exercises. The middle part of being in hospital was disappointing and frustrating as I didn’t feel I could really take advantage of the opportunity of being in rehab but things improved and I was able to do more.

The staff helped me a lot and taught my husband how to do the exercises with me which helped me get extra practice. They have given me the opportunity to do some walking and even extended my stay to give me more time to work on my goals.
