"I don't feel seen or listened to"

About: General practices in Greater Glasgow & Clyde

(as the patient),

I have recently had numerous consultations with a GP at my surgery, and years as a patient, and have always left my consultations with the same feeling; they don't care, there is no personalisation or history check prior to them making contact, and that they can't get off the call quick enough. I don't feel they take any time to properly address any health concern I may have, and is more than happy to prescribe medication to get me off the call.

I understand their job is taxing, I understand their  job is under immense pressure, however, as a patient who only makes contact for a GP when it is required, I don't appreciate being left to feel like a nuisance.

In the past I attempted suicide by means of a prescription medication overdose and ended up in hospital. Approximately a year following this event, I reached out to the GP as my mental health had taken a severe nosedive again and without hesitation they prescribed me two months' worth of antidepressants and ended the consultation.

Recently I have called, and the telephone calls have lasted literally a couple of minutes, with the GP quick to throw medication at me and end the consultation.

As a patient, I don't feel seen, I don't feel adequately listened to, and during the short conversations it is evident to me that the GP makes no effort to check a patient's medical file or history before calling back to consult.

This needs to be addressed.

Dear Alexander261

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us.

I am very sorry to hear that your consultations have left you feeling unseen and unheard. GP practices are independent contractors, and each has their own system for managing feedback, concerns, and complaints. They are not registered to respond to feedback received via Care Opinion. If you feel comfortable doing so, I would encourage you to contact the Practice Manager to discuss your concerns. If you need support navigating the complaints process, the Patient Advice and Support Service (PASS) is available to assist you. They can be reached at 0800 917 2127 or through their website: https://pass-scotland.org.uk/.

If you need urgent help, you can call NHS 24 Mental Health Services on 111. If you just need to talk with someone, then the following organisations can help: Samaritans - 116 123 (freephone) Breathing Space - 0800 83 85 87 (freephone).

Thank you

Nicole
