"Experience in gynaecology/maternity outpatients"

About: Ormskirk and District General Hospital / Gynaecology Ormskirk and District General Hospital / Maternity

(as a service user),

Hello. I have visited the gynaecology/maternity outpatient department numerous times for both a miscarriage, and successful pregnancy (scans etc.). I felt extremely uncomfortable both times, from 2 different points of views. First, when I experienced a miscarriage, I was sat around multiple heavily pregnant women who were all so happy and excited to have updates/see their babies on scans. This of course made me feel much worse about the situation and I got very upset. Secondly, when I was the happy pregnant women who had just seen their baby for the first time, I remember sitting next to other women who were crying and upset. One person opened up to me and told me they were there because they'd have failed IVF treatment numerous times and was trying for the last time. Both experiences, I felt vulnerable, depressed and guilty for those dealing with infertility or loss.

Many thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback about your experience in the gynaecology and maternity outpatient department at Ormskirk Hospital.

The Early Pregnancy Unit, Gynaecology Outpatients, and Maternity Antenatal Clinic are all located within the same department, which does share a single open-plan waiting area. While staff make every effort to group patients in designated areas within the space, limitations in layout and capacity mean this is not always achievable. A quiet room is available within the department and is used to support patients who have experienced a miscarriage or received difficult news, offering a more private and sensitive environment.

The challenges associated with the shared waiting area and limited space have been escalated to senior NHS leadership and acknowledged for review and consideration. Additionally, the Trust has recently completed the recruitment of an Antenatal Clinic Matron, who will be overseeing space management as part of her portfolio.

We hope that this offers you and other service users some assurance that this matter is being addressed.
