"Arthritis in left hip"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Elective Orthopaedics (Ward 7) University Hospital Wishaw / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a service user),

I was previously diagnosed with arthritis in both hips had resurfacing of right hip and a few years later reattended due to reoccurrence at this time consultant commented that both hips required replacement and asked which I wanted first as wouldn't do both together.

Having had right hip replaced and following discussion with surgeon around trying to keep hip for as long as possible I have continued to go on without having left hip replaced. Due to increased pain and limitations in movement I have reattended to have left hip replaced, referred for x-ray and to complete a questionnaire.

I have been informed I’m on around an 83 week waiting list just to see a consultant, currently around 25 weeks in. Despite having been told in excess of 7 years ago it was up to me which hip I had replaced first.

I live on my own so have no option but to keep going no matter how painful it gets affecting both legs and is also creating pain across bottom half of my back. Affects my sleep and mood, which impacts on my existing depression diagnosis and anxiety

Dear charame85,

Thank you for sharing your experience of University Hospitals Hairmyres and Wishaw.

I am very sorry to hear of the impact your arthritis is having on your life and that you are now facing a very long wait to have your other hip replaced. I can only imagine how frustrating this must be for you.

In order for us to look into this further, please could you contact our patient affairs team on the below email address so they can gather further details, investigate and provide a personal response?

Patientaffairs@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk

Best Wishes,

Jenni
