I was referred to the Infertility Clinic in the Ulster Hospital for investigation. I had previously been seen in the Regional Fertility Clinic in the RVH which was a positive experience. We had 2 cycles of IVF, one resulting in a miscarriage and one which did not result in a positive pregnancy test. SUbsequent to this we had a natural pregnancy which also resulted in a miscarriage. After seeing a consultant with regards to recurrent miscarriages, they thought it would be useful to see a fertility specialist again, and that the Ulster now provided this service.
I was seen in the Infertility Clinic in the Ulster pretty quickly, but when I arrived at the appointment, I was shocked to see that it was in the maternity outpatients department. This meant me sitting with a corridor with pregnant women walking around with their green folders, and me without a folder or a pregnancy. I just felt this was really insensitive and for someone who has been trying to have a family for 12 years, really quite difficult.
The RFC in the Royal is part of the maternity hospital, but has a different entrance and clinic, which is much more thoughtful for anyone attending.
In addition, and it may seem like a silly point to make, but the RVH service is called Fertility Clinic, the Ulster uses the term Infertility Clinic, which I found a bit insensitive.
The care I actually received was totally satisfactory and the staff were nice and I have no complaints about them, but the location is not appropriate and does not consider the needs of the people who are struggling with fertility.
