"Fertility assessments in Ulster hospital"

About: Royal Victoria Hospital / Regional Fertility Centre The Ulster Hospital / Gynae Outpatients

(as the patient),

I was referred to the Infertility Clinic in the Ulster Hospital for investigation. I had previously been seen in the Regional Fertility Clinic in the RVH which was a positive experience. We had 2 cycles of IVF, one resulting in a miscarriage and one which did not result in a positive pregnancy test. SUbsequent to this we had a natural pregnancy which also resulted in a miscarriage. After seeing a consultant with regards to recurrent miscarriages, they thought it would be useful to see a fertility specialist again, and that the Ulster now provided this service.

I was seen in the Infertility Clinic in the Ulster pretty quickly, but when I arrived at the appointment, I was shocked to see that it was in the maternity outpatients department. This meant me sitting with a corridor with pregnant women walking around with their green folders, and me without a folder or a pregnancy. I just felt this was really insensitive and for someone who has been trying to have a family for 12 years, really quite difficult.

The RFC in the Royal is part of the maternity hospital, but has a different entrance and clinic, which is much more thoughtful for anyone attending.

In addition, and it may seem like a silly point to make, but the RVH service is called Fertility Clinic, the Ulster uses the term Infertility Clinic, which I found a bit insensitive.

The care I actually received was totally satisfactory and the staff were nice and I have no complaints about them, but the location is not appropriate and does not consider the needs of the people who are struggling with fertility.

Dear Virgo6,

Thank you for your feedback. I am glad that you found the staff nice in our fertility clinic. I understand how difficult it is to be surrounded by antenatal patients, especially when attending the fertility clinic and I am sorry you had to experience this. We are hoping to move to a new purpose built gynae outpatients that will be separate from the maternity building. This will allow for a more appropriate setting for our clinics. Until then we are also looking into alternative locations within the trust. I am unsure of where we refer to the clinic as infertility, please feed this back to me and I can work on addressing this issue (louisa.mckibbin@setrust.hscni.net)

Kind Regards,

Louisa

Louisa,

Thanks for your response. I will send you an email with my hospital letter inviting me to attend the Infertility Clinic and a summary of my appointment which also states that I attended the Infertility Clinic.
