My mum is undergoing palliative chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer, she has a terminal prognosis. She recently fell at home and broke her wrist.
Being as unwell as she is currently and being immuno-compromised, we tried to get her an appointment at the Minor Injuries unit at Stobhill, but when we presented there we were asked to go to Glasgow Royal Infirmary because of my mum's condition.
I have to admit, my heart sank when they said this as the Royal is well-known for having a very busy A&E. I almost thought about just taking my mum home, as I thought maybe she'd just injured but not broken her wrist and was weighing this up against a long wait in A&E and how she would cope with that being so unwell.
However that would have been a very wrong decision had we done that, as it turned out it was a bad break!
Anyway, what I want to share was how amazing each and every member of staff were in Glasgow Royal Infirmary A&E. The nurse who triaged my mum was so lovely and compassionate. The A&E doctor, the orthopaedic doctor as well as the nurse who took the bloods and gave her pain relief I think all must have been in their 20s but absolutely knew their stuff and treated my mum with such kindness and compassion.
The woman who came round offering sandwiches was also so kind and lovely.
The process of x-rays and treatment took many hours but I cannot fault the staff one bit, all of them an absolute credit to the NHS (and humanity in general!) I could see how busy everyone was and yet their energy and kindness was really incredible. Thank you so much!
