"Listened to my concerns and put me at ease"

About: Fife Community Services / Rapid Cancer Diagnostic Service (RCDS)

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

During the last year my health has not been good. I have had various periods where I have had to attend a number of departments at the hospital. This included suspected heart attack, bleed on the brain and other issues.

After all these episodes and other cancer type symptoms, my GP thought it best to refer me to the RCDS unit. My wife had passed away with cancer so this was very worrying for me.

After the initial phone call I was quite overwhelmed. I initially didn't take up the offer of a CT scan because I needed to get my head around the fact that I might have cancer.  The staff agreed to call me back a few days later.

I'm so glad they did and soon I was given a CT scan appointment and got the results. The staff at the RCDS listened to my concerns and put me at ease and I'm pleased to say the outcome was good for me.  Without this reassurance I may not have had the scan.

Thanks to the RCDS staff, they made a worrying time less so.

Dear rcdsal169,

Thank you for taking the time to feedback about your recent experience with the RCDS service. I am sorry to hear that you have had such health challenges prior to your time with the service.

Dealing with a bereavement, and being faced with similar concerns for cancer yourself, must have been very challenging and overwhelming. I am glad the staff were able to offer you that space for breathing, and that additional time you required to consider proceeding with the referral.

Its nice to hear that the staff were able to reassure you to progress to having investigations, and that your overall experience and investigations had a positive outcome.

I will make sure to pass on your feedback to the team, who will be delighted to know that their efforts made such a positive difference to your experience.

Best wishes,

Katie Wilkin

Team Lead and ACNS RCDS
