"A simple treatment steps seemed like moving a mountain"

About: Daisy Hill Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Arrived with very high fever to Daisy Hill Hospital. Triaged quickly and given oral paracetamol whilst awaiting bloods ( though I mentioned the drugs didn’t seem to be making a difference). Temperature continued to rise where I nearly collapsed, staff seemed nonchalant to my mother who was panicking but did their best to move me to an isolation ward quickly.

There I had an ecg and bloods taken instantly however no word of blood results for nearly 4 hours despite the nurse saying one was instantly read. Even after results showed severe dehydration to the point of near kidney injury, it took a further 2 hours to start fluids . When fluids were started they did so by blousing in a whole bag quickly something you do in an emergency.

My sister a doctor questioned a lot and tried to hurry their response as she was concerned for sepsis but was met with “ in a minute “ and cold stares a lot.

I made a full recovery and am very grateful for my care however as a health care professional myself, I cannot fathom 6 hours to start fluids knowing my blood results.

The majority of staff were very pleasant especially junior doctors who did their best to answer my sisters questions , I just wonder is there a system where the simple act of placing a cannula and administering fluids to a deteriorating patient can be hastened or is the entire system snarling to a halt ?

My discharge also took 6 hours which again seemed wild as I know how urgently they needed the space . I just feel there must be a better way !!

I appreciate triage and that I should be absolutely grateful I wasn’t first on their list, just feel like in my case, simple treatment steps seemed like moving a mountain.

In contrast, I needed to bring my two daughters the following day with similar symptoms. We were instantly triaged, isolated and given treatment whilst we awaited the doctor who was lovely.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We sincerely regret the delay in your treatment and understand how frustrating this experience must have been for you.

DHH ED strive to provide timely care to all patients. Unfortunately at times delays can occur due to high patient volumes (overcrowding) and staff shortages. Please know that we are actively working on improving our processes to minimize such occurrences in the future.
