"Day of surgery team in BCH"

About: Belfast City Hospital / General Surgery General Surgery / Gardener Robb Day Procedure Unit (DPU) General Surgery / Recovery General Surgery / Ward 2 East Day of Surgery Unit

(as a service user),

After a call on Friday night to say there was a cancellation for a surgery I'd waited on since June last year(and may have waited longer without that call) my experience with the day of surgery unit was first class. From the friendly receptionist clerking in a whole room full of patients at 7am with a smile. To then be admitted by Deputy Sister Katya who immediately put me at ease as normal anxiety of a being in for a procedure set in. She was a breath of fresh air and kept me in craic as she went about her many tasks in the busy ward. And discharged me at the end of my stay with a hug (I'd also been awaiting news of my mum's cancer review on the same day- which was good news too). Her colleague Jithya also looked after me so well on my return to the unit, tea and toast has never tasted so good! But she also sorted out all my home meds and certificates to sign me out of work for my recovery.

The next team in surgery, the lovely consultant anaesthetist and nurses in the prep room, very professional and again put me right at ease with their chat and care and attention. Also very grateful to Dr Harley's team for their care.

Coming round in recovery to nurse Kelly waking me up- not a fan of that in mornings generally, so she had a job on her hands! And her managing my pain and also keeping me chatting to distract me and reassure me.

I can honestly say everyone yesterday treated me with the care and attention they would one of their own. And all genuinely seemed to be enjoying their roles despite what we know about the pressures all NHS services are facing. It was such a positive experience and although I also work in the NHS, I am incredibly grateful for their treatment and care.
