In May 2023 I woke up to my legs no longer functioning. They had been getting worse for some time. I was hospitalised in Crosshouse for 10 days where an MRI as a showed a trapped nerve in my upper spinal cord (T1/T2 area). Discussions were had between Crosshouse and Glasgow. It was deemed safer not to operate as I still had good upper body strength for someone in their 80s. I was then transferred to the Biggart rehab hospital, Prestwick.
The staff in both Crosshouse and particularly the Biggart were first class. Caring, competent and, in most case with a good sense of humour. The latter quality helped me through the rehab in Biggart for 4 months. The only complaint was that I was fit to be discharged with a care package after the first 2 months. The other 2 months were waiting for a care package. At that time this was not an uncommon problem.
On release I was given carers in the morning to get me out of bed and in the evening to put me back. My wife has severe arthritis in her knees, hence the care package.
My first package was at my original address, but due to the cottage being on two levels, we had to move house to a ground floor flat. As both were in South Ayrshire there was no need to change packages.
I have had many different carers during this time with some regular. All have been first class. Competent, helpful and cheery. I have favourites, but they are all good.
My only observation is the very strange shift system which appears to tire out the carers by the end of their four day split shift. They still do their job, but I can tell they’re often quite tired. Although it’s none of my business, South Ayrshire may consider looking into their shift system.
Lastly, I would like to thank all the staff of Ayrshire NHS and Home Care for looking after me and taking the burden from my wife, who cares for me well once I’m up and on my wheelchair.
