"Care of my Grandma following RTA"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Accident & Emergency Ninewells Hospital / Surgical High Dependency Unit Trauma & Orthopaedics / Major Trauma Ward

(as a relative),

My 85 year old grandma was involved in a car accident in 2023. She suffered multiple injuries and fractures and had to go to theatre for several operations, including a laparotomy to repair her small bowel and split skin grafting to repair an open fracture to her ankle. She spent 3 months in Ninewells hospital, mainly in the major trauma unit but initially came in through A&E and then spent some time in the surgical high dependency unit.

I didn't meet any of the staff in A&E but would like to express my gratitude for their service. My grandma was particularly fond of nurse David in the SHDU and I would like to thank him for his communication with us as a family during a very difficult time.

My Grandma spent around 3 months in the major trauma unit and I felt she was very well looked after. She received excellent care and was particularly fond of nurses Tony, Dawn, Ashleigh, Laurie, Kate and ANP Jess. Her consultant, Ms Lindsey, worked tirelessly to fix the open fracture to her ankle using split skin grafting, and finally, over a year later it has fully healed and she has made a very good recovery.

Thank you to everyone who was involved in the care of my Grandma, including nurses, health care assistants, domestics, porters, physios, OT's, medical staff and anyone else I have missed.

Dear Jaspercat850

thank-you for taking the time to feedback about your Grandma's care experience - aspects of which involved the Emergency Department. I will share your positive comments with the wider ED team which I'm sure will give them a real boost. This last year must have been a very worrying time for you and your family. It's lovely to hear that your Grandma is on the mend after this trauma.

kind regards

Dr Andrew Kinnon
