"The level of care was sub-standard"

About: Royal Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency Royal Victoria Hospital / Ear, Nose & Throat

(as the patient),

I was recently referred by my GP to the urgent ENT clinic at the Royal Victoria Hospital.

I was referred because I had eye haemorrhage in both eyes and a headache and was advised not to drive.

At 2pm I received a call from ENT at the RVH to come asap. I am in my late 70s and waited in A&E for 10 hours for triage before a very junior Dr saw me.

When I was eventually called, the Dr not once looked into my eyes or examined them.  They asked multiple questions over and over again. At this stage given my age, I was exhausted, frustrated, hungry and wanted to go home.  I was so upset. It was about 11.30pm.

This Dr, while very polite, seemed to be very unsure about what they were doing.

I was sent back out to sit in A&E and advised a prescription would be made up for some ointment. I sat for over another hour and was called again. This time to see another Dr, who had brought out an instrument to examine my eyes. They had never used it before and again did not seem to know what they were doing. It was a farce. I was beyond exhausted and could take no more. At about 1.30am I decided to leave and go home, and left untreated for the condition for which I had been referred at 11am that morning.

To keep a person of my age in a floundering A&E department, with no treatment is unacceptable. The level of care was sub-standard.

The situation traumatised me for several days after, causing me more upset at what I had to endure.  This is no way to treat any person, never mind the elderly.

Dear WhiteLab27,

I’m John Barron, Service Manager for Urgent and Emergency Care. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on Care Opinion. I am sorry to read you had such a long wait and a poor experience.

Unfortunately, the entire Health and Social Care System remains under significant pressure and as a result this often results in long wait times and impersonal interactions with staff. We do strive to treat each patient individually with care and compassion through all stages of their journey in ED, unfortunately on this occasions your experience has notably fallen short.

If you could send a confidential message to PatientExperience@belfasttrust.hscni.net with your name, DoB and date of attendance, I would like to investigate your experience further and share your story as a learning point. We are continually reviewing the design of our services in an attempt to ensure that patients receive timely care and your experience is not one we would wish any patient or their relative.

Best regards

John (Service Manager Adult Urgent & Emergency Care)
