"Stop smoking after heartache"

About: Quit your Way / Quit your way (community)

(as the patient),

I'm in my 60s and I took a heart attack in late 2024.

I was a smoker for about 47 years  but after my heart attack I was told to  stop smoking 🚬. Those that are reading this, as you all know you go to the doctors with a cold, it's always the same, you get told have to stop smoking but this was a different story.

It wasn't easy but I haven't had a cigarette since November. The support I have been getting from the smoke help line has been fantastic, they have been phoning me very week to see how I'm doing. I was getting the cigarette patches from them, went down every 4 weeks.

It's been really hard at some points with the sweating and the random nightmares. l got to point where 3 weeks into the the program I did have a roll up but I took 2 or 3 draws and put it out, the smell of it just enough to tell me I don't want this.

Listen, i'll tell you my taste and smell as totally came back, food has never been so different and just the smell of a cigarettes are just not for me now. There is a lot of help out there but it's down to you and having the willpower to try and stop smoking .

P.S. It is now 5 months and I have no  intending to go back to smoking, if you are thinking of stopping just call the help line, they have helped me so much.

Dear Geodav63,

Congratulations on successfully stopping smoking, it's an amazing achievement, especially after 47 years!

I am sorry to hear that you had a heart attack - stopping smoking is the single best thing you can do for yourself with so many health benefits, including tasting and smelling better, and also for heart and overall health too.

Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us, and for encouraging others. It sounds like it wasn't easy but you persevered and I am so pleased to hear that you found the weekly support from the Quit Your Way Community Team and the nicotine replacement therapy (patches) helpful - as the manager of the team I will be sure to share your feedback.

I wish you all the very best for the remainder of your Smokefree journey.

Kindest Regards, Donna Lang
