"Frequency of examinations"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Clinical Genetics Whitehills Health and Community Care Centre / Clinical Genetics

(as the patient),

I had a ecocardiogram which used to be every year when I was younger, then every 2 years, now it is every 3 years. Whilst I am happy to get them & have no issues with the eco itself, I think that as I am over 50, I should be seen more often.

I no longer get seen by a genetic counsellor either. I fear this is not good as a lot can change in 2-3 years. My son had open heart surgery in his 20s due to having the same condition as myself, Marfan Syndrome. An expansion in the aortic valve was detected & 6 months later he had the surgery. If this had gone undetected for 3 years he could of died. My father died in his 30s due to an Aortic Aneurysm because of having Marfan Syndrome. This was in 1983 and back then, little was known about the condition so it was never detected that his aortic valve was weakening.

I have always appreciated what my Dr's & Surgeons have done for me with having Marfans Syndrome. However, I think it is a mistake to reduce how often ecocardiograms take place.
