"The whole team clearly respond to the ethos of care"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance University Hospital Hairmyres / Cardiology University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department University Hospital Hairmyres / Medical Assessment Unit

(as a service user),

I was recently an in patient in Hairmyers hospital following an episode of chest pain which was attributed to an NSTEMI!

My initial engagement was with SAS when they collected me from home before taking me to A&E. These guys were effective and efficient in my treatment and care.

Whilst the staff who cared for me in A&E were on the whole were very caring and empathetic- the triage nurse who met with me, gave me the impression that not only they were busy, but, that me being there was not appropriate!!  I felt like a fraud- I nearly left the department untreated/diagnosed!

I was admitted into ward 2 while awaiting consideration of ongoing care.   The ward staff dealt with a very busy environment with a keen sense of humour ensuring the through put and range of conditions were appropriately stabilised and transferred where necessary!

I was transferred to cardiology ward 9!

Whilst I wish this hadn’t been necessary it was a lovely experience!

The whole staff team who were involved in my care were amazing.  They effectively and efficiently delivered compassionate care in what was a very emotional period for me as I was learning to accept a significant diagnosis.

I was fortunate to witness the registered nurses provide a very healthy learning environment for a range of learners from HNC students- paramedics and student nurses!  It was a delight to see all the learning opportunities taken advantage of.

Staff Nurse Laura was the nurse who provided and managed my care for 3 days in the ward, not only to me but to the three other patients in the room. SN Laura delivered and coordinated care in a clearly empathetic manner and, worked in a way that prioritised patients- her support of learning on the ward demonstrates a key element of nursing where promoting professionalism and trust by demonstrating through her behaviour and approach how it should be done!!

Throughout my stay on ward 9 the whole team clearly respond to the ethos of care that is patient led.

Thank you for this.

Dear Doriswsn137

Thank you for taking time to share your positive and constructive feedback regarding the care you received from SAS through to ward 9.

I am however very sorry to read about how the triage nurse made you feel. Chest pain is complex as you know, and should be appropriately assessed. I am so glad that you waited to be seen despite being made to feel that it was inappropriate for you to be there. Being diagnosed with a NSTEMI is clearly a diagnosis that needs expert care and I apologise that staff let the pressures of the department affect their judgement.

Your comments will be widely shared as we learn from feedback and use this to focus on improvement as well reiterate good practice.

As your journey progresses through the hospital you have managed to capture so many observations and reading your comments gives us a sense of pride as you clearly describe staff interactions. All staff work hard to deliver patient centred care and it is lovely to read letters and posts that describe such detail.

Laura will be delighted to read your comments and all staff will appreciate you sharing your experience. Ward 9 is a highly skilled team in terms of cardiology care and I am very grateful to you for writing about your care.

I hope that you are taking time to recover and I wish you all the very best.

Thank you again.

Kind regards

Lise

Hi Doriswsn137,

I'm sorry to hear you were recently in hospital and I hope you're feeling a bit better now.

I see my colleague Lise at NHS Lanarkshire has already replied and responded regarding your wider points about the care you received at the hospital itself, but I just wanted to thank you for the positive comments you made about our staff at the Scottish Ambulance Service. This is lovely to hear.

Take care,
Mark
