"My mother's care in A&E"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Emergency department

(as a relative),

My mother is in her 90s and was referred to A&E by the Out Of Hours unit as they suspected she would need intravenous furosemide type medication as she wasn't getting rid of enough fluid via her double dosage of furosemide at home. She was put on oxygen and various drips and was treated for pneumonia.

She sat in a corridor overnight with no food to eat and no seat for her family (we eventually commandeered a broken wheelchair). She was then moved to a chair in Majors where she sat, in total, roughly 27 hours, shoulder to shoulder with other very sick patients . Some of whom were sitting there for 3 days already!

She was then moved to a cubicle, where she stayed for three days . I had to wash her in a public toilet where the ambulances arrived - due to a suspected outbreak of Monkeypox ,all toilets were closed!

Both patients either side of her had dementia and shouted most of the night . She barely slept the whole time she was there and the food was cold and disgusting.

While the staff were lovely, each nurse who tended to her told her to drink plenty of fluids and when I told them that her GP had said to only drink her normal daily amount they asked if she was suffering from heart failure, to which I said yes! They came back later to tell her indeed to just stick to a nominal amount!  Scary!

My mother was sent home, being 1st told she would be moved to a corridor on a ward and then later told that there was no chance of a bed! She suffered a very tender bottom from sitting for so long and  we are dealing with this at home to ensure it doesn't break out . Also the cubicle wasn't cleaned once while we were there and it was well below the standard of cleanliness expected from a hospital!

I dread to think that my mother would ever have to be admitted there again, indeed I actually think that she would refuse to go! The whole experience was so traumatic and so unfair to any patient needing emergency care .

Dear Outflowrd93,

My name is Joanne Daly and I am the Support Services Manager responsible for both Cleaning and Catering on the Altnagelvin Site, I hope your mother is keeping well and I'm sorry that recent experience in ED was a negative one..

I can assure you that the Domestic Team work really hard cleaning not only the ED department but the entire hospital Site. The Altnagelvin site is experiencing unprecedented strain as it continues to see an increasing number of patients presenting in particular the ED and hospital site causing flow and capacity issues. This challenges for the Housekeeping Team and is particularly challenging as ED is operating over capacity on a daily basis. Support Services House Keeping Team endeavor to ensure a safe and hygienic environment for both our Patients, Visitors and Staff and can assure the team work hard in liaison with our nursing and Infection Prevention colleagues to ensure cleanliness and safety and are audited on an ongoing Routine basis. On occasion we do have to take toilets out of use to ensure they are cleaned and cleaning schedules are followed in such difficult circumstances. This also applies to cleaning of cubicles and often patients have to wait while a cubicle is being cleaned. It is also challenging to clean when a patient and family members are present in a cubicle space. Domestic staff will clean at the nursing teams request if a patient has gone for an Xray for example

Unfortunately Catering in ED department is also challenged and are providing food for a huge number of meals and this is challenging. The Catering Team prepare and plate food then Nursing staff serve patients ensuring all their dietary/allergen requirements are met. The Catering staff are all Food Safety Trained and complete temperature checks in accordance with Catering Departments Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point plan (HACCP principles).ensuring that Catering services are safe and compliant with standards and regulations including Food Safety and hygiene. Your complaint will be shared with the team and we will discuss further how we can improve on the issues raised.

The Housekeeping Team and Catering Team are sorry that your Mother did not have a positive experience. I do hope this response helps to reassure you that your concerns have been taken very seriously.
