"Always thinking of practical ways to help"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Older adults mental health

(as a relative),

After my Dad admitting to suicidal ideation we called 112 and were put in touch with the mental health team who were amazing. They came to see him at home and we eventually got him checked into ward 39.

The care my Dad has received over the past year has been fantastic. There have been ups and downs as he turned out to have a Neuro degenerative condition which is life limiting, but through every step the concern and care for my Dad was clear. The nurses, doctors, physios, specialists, canteen staff, cleaners - everyone in that ward understands mental health and particularly how it affects older people. They were always thinking of practical ways to help ease his delusions, like turning off the news at night, as he would think different terrorist groups were coming to kill him.

They were there with advice and tissues when it was time for him to move on and helped us come to terms with finality of his condition.

The nurses and support workers were never too busy to answer any of my questions - which were many!! So thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you all did.

Dear melonkj64

Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a heartfelt message. We are deeply touched by your words and will make sure they are passed on to the incredible team on Ward 39.

We understand how challenging it must have been for you and your dad, especially given the complexity of his condition. It’s wonderful to hear that the care he received from the nurses, doctors, physios, specialists, and all staff members helped provide not just medical support, but also a compassionate, holistic approach to his mental health and well being. We are particularly glad to hear that the staff were able to offer practical solutions to help ease his anxiety, and that they were there for you with both support and guidance during such a difficult time.

The dedication of our team to answer your questions and offer comfort when needed is exactly what we strive for, and your gratitude means a great deal to all of us.

We are honoured to have been able to support your family through this journey, and we wish you and your dad peace as you navigate the challenges ahead.

Kind regards

Kevin
