"Didn't explain anything to me"

About: Western Isles Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Recently having had a hip replacement in the Western Isles hospital i feel the care given by the doctor wasn't the best. Unfortunately my replacement took longer than what was expected due to some difficulties which I fully understand, however the doctor in question let me leave the hospital having not explained anything to me. I don't know what went wrong, why i lost so much blood, why the pain i was in was so bad I was vomiting or even what kind of replacement was done. I spent 3 days in hospital and not once did the doctor speak to me.  I have severely suffered since I got home in pain to the point I've had to consult with my own GP. The nurses in the ward were fantastic and the care they gave was absolutely outstanding however the doctor has seriously let them down.

Dear wearingtw66

Thankyou for taking the time to contact us via Care Opinion to tell us about your recent experience following your hip replacement.

I have passed on your feedback to the Clinical Lead and we are very sorry to hear that you have had a disappointing experience with your Medical team.

We would be very happy to coordinate an appointment where you could have the opportunity to discuss your recent surgery and hopefully answer any questions you may have.

Our medical team are always available to talk to their patients, so we are very sorry that this did not happen in your case.

I can be contacted on 01851 704704 or at denise.symington@nhs.scot and I can arrange an appointment for you and ask for a little more detail that would allow us to share your feedback directly with the consultant involved in your care.

I have passed on your gratitude to the nursing staff on the ward.

I was grateful to hear that you have been receiving continuing support from the Primary Care Team and wish you well with your ongoing recovery.

kind regards

Denise Symington
