"Lost my sense of taste"

About: Glasgow Dental Hospital and School / Oral Surgery - Level 3 and Level 4

(as the patient),

I had some unusual problems that were hard to describe. Out of nowhere, I realised I had lost my sense of taste and sensation & I could barely taste anything. Spicy foods, toothpaste, pickled onions—nothing. Vinegar for example, just felt like water, with no taste sting or sensation at all.

I already suffer from geographic tongue, so I was used to certain things burning my tongue and it being extra sensitive, but suddenly I felt nothing. Eventually I got referred to the Glasgow Dental Hospital and I had checks and CT scan and MRI to make sure nothing serious was going on.

I had already lived with this for about two years and it had started causing me a lot of anxiety and getting me down. Dr Harrison explored different treatment options to try and figure out the cause. I had pretty much lost hope but the medication has worked and my taste and sensation are finally back. I still can’t quite believe it.

I’m very grateful this has really been life changing. I can finally stop worrying and start enjoying life again including the simple things that I had lost appreciation for like eating out with friends and family.

Dear indigobluex,

I am so sorry to hear of the long term oral health problems you have been having. This must have been very upsetting. It can be challenging in itself to manage geographic tongue, however to also lose your sensation of taste must have been such a worry for you.

I am so pleased that eventually a diagnosis was made by our team and a successful treatment was prescribed for you. I do hope that you continue to thoroughly enjoy all the lovely things that you missed while struggling with your symptoms.

I will share your very kind feedback with Doctor Harrison all of our team who will be thrilled to know they have made such a difference. Thank you for taking time to tell us.

Best wishes,

Fiona
