(as a parent/guardian),

My teenager needed their ingrown toenail removed. They are autistic and have a strong fear of medical settings. So when we knew that nail surgery was inevitable it wasn’t great!

We needn’t have worried the staff were amazing from start to finish. At the pre assessment the podiatrist described things slowly and did not rush through the examination.

On the day of the procedure both my teenager and I felt anxious. The podiatrists listened, explained everything and most importantly went at the pace of my teenager. Honestly could not have asked for anything more. During the pre assessment and the day of the procedure all staff were really friendly, chatty and professional. The toe in question is now a week post procedure and is healing well.

Many thanks for taking the time to post your feedback.

Anxiety can be debilitating for many and of course this can be heightened further for those with Autism. It is so reassuring to hear that our staff were able to give information, support, empathy and time to minimise anxiety for you both.

Our service is underpinned by an ambition to be patient centred in the care we deliver. Our staff are trained to try to keep this ambition at the forefront of our assessment and treatment planning. Being able to communicate effectively with all our service users is therefore key in determining the expectations of the care we provide to them. Reading this experience of the service gives us confidence that we are achieving our aims and objectives.

It is great to hear that the toe is healing well and if either of you have any concerns going forward then please do not hesitate to contact the department.
