"Emergency Department visit"

About: Royal Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

I brought my daughter to Emergency department in the Royal Victoria Hospital . She was in a lot of pain and ended up in Emergency surgery.

The overcrowding was absolutely shocking and the waiting times ridiculous. Despite the appalling conditions -  eg 6 patients in a one-person cubicle - each and every staff member that interacted with us was helpful and caring.

Despite having to deal with a very many difficult situations and people, they did so with the upmost respect.

In my view, they all deserve a medal.

ET11,

I’m John Barron, Service Manager for Urgent and Emergency Care. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on Care Opinion.

Unfortunately, the entire Health and Social Care System remains under significant pressure and as a result this often results in a crowded department and long wait times. Sadly staff have to deal with challenging behaviours from a small number of patients which also has an impact on the experience of other patients in the area. I am pleased to read, despite the wait and crowding, your interactions with every staff member was positive. I hope your daughter is keeping well are continuing to make steady progress.

I'll be sure to pass on your kind words to the team. It'll be a real encouragement to them.

Kind regards

John
