"Tongue tie clinic"

About: Maternity care / Tongue tie service

(as a parent/guardian),

We have had quite a few issues with baby suffering extreme reflux and extremely slow weight gain, and after seeing the breastfeeding lead we were referred to the tongue tie clinic as she thought there was a tie there. We were seen and was assured there was no tie at 8 weeks.

Things didn't get any better, her feeding got worse and I developed postpartum depression and anxiety with how much I was struggling. We went private and got informed she did in fact have a tie. The service had scored her function 19/20 and in the private clinic she scored 5/20 with only 40% tongue function at nearly 15 weeks.

Since her tie being cut, her reflux has improved significantly. We have struggled on for 7 weeks since seeing this service and cause my daughter unnecessary suffering. Started to tear me apart. Caused my daughter to be on not just one but three medications to control the symptom of reflux.

We wouldn't have minded if we'd been informed there was a tie but it didn't need cut. We would have been happy to pay privately then but we are extremely annoyed we were told there was no tie yet when it came to paying privately it was quite severe. The amount of emotional and physical distress it has caused us is not okay.

Hello Misnk59, my name is Brenda and I am the head of Midwifery and Gynaecology

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I sorry that this has been such a difficult journey for you.

Within the Trust we offer a Tongue Tie service for breastfeeding babies at both Altnagelvin and SWAH. At this appointment the infant feeding lead will carry out an assessment on feeding. A robust evidence based assessment tool is used whereby a score is given for function out of 14 and appearance out of 10. A frenulotomy (tongue tie release) is carried out when conservative measures fail. Mothers are usually made aware that should symptoms persist; they can have their baby reassessed up to 12 weeks.

Unfortunately I am unable to comment on your case without more specific information on the management of your baby. I’m happy to speak to you in person to further understand your experience and see if we can make improvements to our service. You can contact me at 02871345171 Ext: 216139 if you wish to discuss this further.

Regards

Brenda McClafferty
