"Moved around at midnight"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Day Surgery

(as the patient),

This was my second visit to the Unit. I’ve found it very professional and friendly. Everyone puts you at your ease and always on hand to offer help.

After my procedure I was returned to the unit for an overnight stay. Unfortunately I missed dinner but sandwiches were provided. After eating them I was violently sick, probably because I hadn’t eaten since 6.00am. Nurse’s again looked after me and made sure I was okay.

The other problem I had was the 3 way catheter that had been fitted after my procedure was bypassing regularly and was impacting on me getting to sleep.

Finally I managed to get to sleep only to be interrupted by staff(only doing their job). They were instructed to remove all patients from day surgery and allocate them to other wards. There was 5 patients and 2 nurses effected by this. Forgot to say this all happened at midnight.

I found this very disturbing as I was then moved to another ward where my observations weren’t carried out at all during the night.

It was also back to square one in trying to get to sleep. I found this very detrimental to my overall wellbeing.

All in all a terrible experience with no explanation apart from our nurses were required on other wards.

Dear Troxe85

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience in day surgery when having a planned procedure.

I am glad that you have been happy with the care provided by the Day Surgery staff who were friendly and professional and sound like they were able to put you at ease.

With regarding to being moved late on in the evening, I can only apologise for how unsettling this must have been for you. Had there been another option that evening, we would have taken this, however, due to the challenging staffing situation elsewhere on the site it was our only option. The decision came late in the evening as we were only then in a position where there were sufficient beds available overnight in the ward areas to be able to safely move patients and close the day surgery unit overnight.

I appreciate this resulted in you being moved very late in the evening and am sorry for the upset and inconvenience this has caused.

Kind Regards

Lynn McTavish
