"waiting on consultants"

About: The Ulster Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

I had to be rushed into A and E earlier today. The whole building is clean and lovely, reception was nice. I was seen pretty quick which is unusual, and was in with the doctor also pretty quick. The doctor himself, Des, deserves a shoutout. Exceptional care, listened and seemed to care and want to help, took the time to explain everything and really helped.

After that is the problem, I was put on a drip and sat there for 5 hours pretty much with no help, the nurses really didn't seem too bothered. My drip wasn't flowing for more than an hour, no one even noticed because no one was around.

Eventually Dr Des came back around, told me a surgeon would be down to explain next steps. The surgeon never showed, I waited for hours again and not a sign. I got fed up, found Des to tell him i was leaving, he apologised and tried to help again but nothing could be done without the consultant.

All in all the visit was good but could be a lot better if the consultants actually put a move on like everyone else seemed to. Reception had all seats filled and you just know it's from waiting on consultants.

Hi Guilherme016

Thank you for taking the time to tell us of your experience when attended the Emergency Department. Thank you for all the positive comments about the department and Dr Des. I will share this with him. I am sorry to hear you had to wait for a Consultant review, we are continually trying to improve our review times and work closely with all teams. I will share your feedback with the Consultant leads. We are constantly working beyond capacity and nursing staff are being stretched as a result covering lots of different areas within the department. I wish to apologise that you drip was not checked more frequently and will remind staff of the importance of doing those checks.

I don't think it is as simple as all patients waiting on consultants in the waiting room, there are emergencies arriving by ambulance frequently and take considerable senior medical staff expertise and time. There are a variety of streams for patients being seen by all grades of staff depending on their presentation. With increased numbers attending ED staff are working extremely hard everyday to provide a high standard of care to all patients in our care.

I hope you are improving and keeping well.

Kind regards

Jenny

ED Lead Nurse
