"She was been a real constant in my treatment"

About: East Lothian Community Hospital / Haematology Western General Hospital / Haematology

(as a service user),

I have been treated at ELCH in the IV room for almost 5 years, since it first opened in 2020.  At 39 years of age I was diagnosed with a blood disorder which is usually seen in elderly patients.  I soon learned that I would be transfusion dependent and was treated at ELCH every two/three weeks for blood transfusions.

The service I have received at ELCH has been outstanding.  I have felt so cared for over the years and have really got to know all the truly wonderful nurses who have looked after me over the years.  I want to highlight in particular Staff Nurse Hazel who has been a huge source of support.  From my diagnosis she has been a real constant in my treatment.  The mental and physical impact of my diagnosis was huge and she has always gone above and beyond to provide advice, reassurance and support.

I learned recently that Hazel has left the service at ELCH and I wanted to share my feedback so that management are aware of the impact she had on me and my treatment.

She really is a credit to the nursing profession and will be greatly missed.  I wish her well for the future.
