"Struggling to get diagnosed and treated"

About: General practices in Greater Glasgow & Clyde

(as a service user),

I have been in touch with my GP for a number of years with the same complaints - I believe symptoms of having a chronic intestinal parasitic infection. I have had various tests done but none have diagnosed my condition.

I had a small bowel obstruction in 2017 and was actually sent home initially until I returned 24 hours later and was then diagnosed with a SBO unknown cause.

My list of symptoms for parasites started in January 2018 initially with extreme fatigue. I had expensive tests done privately by a gut health specialist during this time who confirmed intestinal parasites but only prescribe herbal remedies and not antibiotics.

I have sent numerous photos to my GP of 3 inch worms that I continue to pass when going to the toilet amongst other symptoms.

I was seen by Infectious Diseases in 2020 who didn’t think I have parasites because the microscopic tests haven’t found eggs. I was re referred in 2024 with the same result and referral was rejected due to negative stool sample testing for microscopic eggs.

I sent an email to my GP asking why they are ignoring the fact I have evidence of passing 3 inch worms and have never had an explanation or indeed correspondence.

I am an NHS worker with over 20 years experience and honestly feel abandoned by the service. I feel like I have nowhere to turn and am left to suffer in silence.

Dear Rowling28481

Thank you for taking the time to get in touch via Care Opinion. I am sorry to hear about your ongoing health issues and that you have been left feeling abandoned.

GP practices are independent contractors, and each has their own system for managing feedback, concerns and complaints. In order for your concerns to be addressed, and any complaint you wish to make looked into, you should call or write to the Practice Manager at the GP practice. If you would like independent advice on providing feedback to a GP practice, including making a complaint you could contact the Patient Advice and Support Service either by calling on 0800 917 2127 (office hours) or through their website

https://pass-scotland.org.uk/

Kind Regards

Nicole
