"Dad's long term prescription abruptly changed"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / General Surgery

(as a service user),

My 83 year old father was admitted as a surgical emergency for gallstones and had a stent placed. All good there, but during the admission the surgical team also abruptly cut his long term oxycodone prescription for an unrelated condition in half without a word to him.

This came to light when he was being discharged, and when I challenged this I was told it was too much hassle to change the discharge letter because the medication had already been checked. Staff also admitted not knowing why he was taking the pain medication that had been cut in half.

He is now home, back on usual dose and doing well, but I am now having an administrative nightmare getting the correct medication for him from the pharmacy due to it being changed on his records.

Thank you for sharing feedback in relation to the experience of the care your father received whist under the care of the general surgery team. I am pleased to learn that the stent placement went well, but am disappointed to hear about the difficulties relating to your father's medication management.

I would be grateful of the opportunity to look in to this further, in order to understand where things went wrong. If you wish for me to do so, please do make contact (shaun.robertson@nhs.scot)

Alternatively, if you wish for this to be investigated through NHS Lothian's complaints procedure, please find below the contact details for the Patient Experience Team, who will be able to assist.

You can contact the Patient Experience Team:

I would like to take this opportunity to express how sorry I am that this has happened, and for the unnecessary burden caused by your attempts to resolve the situation.

I hope that your father is recovering well

With best wishes

Shaun
