"The team really made for an excellent experience"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Maternity care Maternity care / 2 East Midwifery Led Unit (MLU) Maternity care / Delivery suite

(as a service user),

I recently attended the midwifery led unit for the birth of my first baby. Due to this being my first birth and first ever admission to hospital, I was feeling a bit nervous and anxious about what was going to happen, however this was quickly forgotten as I engaged with the team.

I attended the assessment unit late at night for a check, having laboured at home all evening and was greeted by a very pleasant and reassuring midwife. I was unsure what to expect given that this was my first birth but the midwife helped explain my options for pain relief as I waited to go into the unit and kept me calm and encouraged.

I was then transferred up to the midwifery unit to give birth and what can I say but wow! The facilities were fantastic and very clean, with a lovely large, bright and airy room.

My midwife Gemma was a ray of sunshine; she helped keep me calm and comfortable as I progressed through my labour. She discussed my options and wishes with me and we quickly formulated a plan and got going.

I laboured in the bath in the en-suite for a number of hours utilising the gas and air (which worked fantastic having been properly informed how to use it!) Gemma was then assisted by Hazel to deliver my baby, and they both were so calming and professional throughout. I felt completely safe and relaxed with them which made for a comfortable and really positive experience.

I remained on the unit overnight where I was then assisted by many of the midwives and midwifery assistants as I tried to establish breastfeeding - each of them so willing to help explain different tips and tricks to help me along. The staff were also very kind and friendly to my husband throughout and made our experience so positive.

The team really made for an excellent experience and myself and baby were very well taken care of during our stay. Thank you!
