"Splenic Artery Embolization"

About: General Surgery / Ward 6B Royal Victoria Hospital / Radiology

(as the patient),

I was admitted to 6B in the Royal Victoria Hospital prior to splenic artery embolization procedure. As I have been living with a medical condition all my life and my Mum being with me 24/7 in the hospital, this was very different for me as it was only my second time as an adult patient. I was very anxious about coming into hospital and going for my procedure. However, the staff in 6B were very welcoming when I arrived at the ward which made me feel at ease.

After my procedure was cancelled first time, I was really upset, the ward manager and staff nurse looking after me that day were so reassuring. Not only did they help put a smile on my face I was assured that I would be first on the list the next day which I was.

Unfortunately after my procedure, I was unwell and had temperatures for almost a week and was in a lot of pain. The staff and doctors continued to monitor me closely to make sure that I didn’t have an infection. The staff and healthcare assistants were extremely caring towards me and were always checking in on me. Despite spending my second birthday in hospital, this one being my 21st. The staff and doctors all managed to put a smile on my face, offering me time away from the hospital with my family and I can’t thank them enough for this.

I would also like to thank the radiography team particularly the consultant who carried out my procedure successfully, with no scar left behind. After a long twelve days spent in hospital I was discharged home.
