"Delays with my hip operation"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Theatres and Recovery Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Trauma and Orthopaedics

(as a service user),

So after waiting far too long for my hip operation, I got up at 5.30am to go. I arrived at 7am on time - I was desperate just to get the whole thing done.

Then my operation was cancelled. I had been waiting for 4 hours in the hospital before I was told. Apparently extreme weather conditions at the time had caused some staff to be absent, which caused a backlog in treatment. Even the surgeon thought they were going to operate on me that day.

I wasn't even given an indication of an alternative date - I was supposed to be an emergency. Obviously not enough of an emergency. All animals are equal but it seems some are more equal than others.

I did finally have my operation in February and it's been an amazing success - I'm recovering well. So for that, a huge thanks to all the doctors and nurses and physios at the ERI who helped me get my life back.

Thank you for your feedback, I would be grateful if you are able to provide some more details in relation to your case. I am more than happy to look into this for you and understand the reason for your cancellation if you are happy to contact the patient experience team. I am equally delighted to hear you have had your surgery and wish you well with your recovery.

Best Wishes

Wendy
