"My current diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Breast surgery Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Mermaid Centre

(as the patient),

So I'm currently recovering from a lumpectomy done by Mr.Batt (awaiting full results of that at the moment) but I wanted to take some time to say thank you to the team at the Mermaid Centre.

I went in because my Dr referred me because of a lump in my breast. She didn't think it was anything sinister due to me being young, no family history and the way it felt but thought it best to get it checked (thank goodness!) I was nervous about going to the mermaid centre because who really wants to go and have their boob's prodded, poked and squashed in a machine. But from the moment I walked in, I was greeted with friendly faces and a cup of tea.

I had an ultrasound (which showed up something) then had the mammogram. The mammogram was nowhere near as scary as I thought it would be and I wouldn't say it hurt at all, just a bit uncomfortable. But again, was talked through it so kindly and was put completely at ease. The mammogram didn't show up this 'thing' that was seen on the ultrasound so at this point I was being told that it probably wasn't anything to worry about. But the lady who did my ultrasound wanted to do a biopsy on it anyway. It felt as if she just wanted to be certain about the lump... for this I will be forever grateful!

The 2 week wait for the results was a little scary but I felt like I was in good hands. 2 weeks later, I'm told it was in fact cancer. The way I was told the news and how it was explained was nothing short of professional and compassionate. Even though it was news I didn't want to hear, I just kept feeling like I was being looked after and under the best care.

3 weeks later and I've had my lumpectomy and a few lymph nodes removed to see if it's spread but again, although I'm not feeling my best (to be expected) I cannot explain just how thankful I am to the whole team at the mermaid centre but the biggest thanks to the lady who did my ultrasound, Mr.Batt, (who truly is so kind, caring and thorough) and the nurses that have been alongside me!!
