"My experience would have been made better with clearer communication"

About: Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / Day Surgery

(as a service user),

I attended Day Surgery at DGRI in January 2025 for urgent treatment and a sigmoidoscopy. Overall I would rate my experience and service a good, however there are some points that would have improved my experience.

1) Following initial discussion with the consultant regarding my planned treatment he asked me to go to the changing room and get changed. I thought he would take me as I didn't know where to go however as I sat there he repeated this to me to I up and went to the changing room across the corridor. I went to the changing room across the corridor which was full of men which thought was weird, some fully clothed and some wearing hospital gowns. After about 15 minutes I remembered reading in the literature that was sent to me from the hospital that there would be male + female rooms, so I went to find that room.

-> better signage (e.g. on door of the room)

-> more specific instructions.

2) I sat in the female changing room for at least 1 hour 30 ins before any member of staff spoke to me. In the meantime I am thinking, I am in the right place?, where do I get changed?, will someone come and let me know?

-> clearer communication & a member of staff meeting you after you have seen the consultant.

3) I was eventually given robes and changes. I wasn't given instructions about it, I had to leave my underwear on underneath the robe so I was pretty anxious about this. I overheard another nurse telling a patient that they can leave their pants on! So I went back to the toilet and put mine back on!

-> clearer communication

My experience would have been made better with clearer communication + instructions.

Dear sierrask97,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story and experience with us. I was pleased to read that your overall experience within the Day Surgery Unit (DSU) was at a good level.

I was however sorry to read that some areas of your experience have caused you concern and I would again like to thank you for taking the time to share these with us. I note from your feedback that the points noted below would have provided you with a clear and more informed experience.

* Better signage (for example the door of the rooms).

* More specific instructions on where to go whilst in DSU.

* Clearer Communication and a member of staff meeting you after being seen by the consultant.

* Clearer communication when changing into robes/gowns.

I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to you for any upset and distress your experience has caused. I will be sure to share this feedback with the teams involved with your care as I know they will appreciate your feedback and have the opportunity to review your suggestions to help improve future patients' experiences.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your invaluable feedback with us.

Kind regards

Jamie
