I had been invited to attend a Physiotherapy MSK Community event at my local Sport Centre. I spoke to an actual physiotherapist with whom I discussed my pain and was given exercises to help me.
There were also a number of manned stalls which offered information and advice on a number of topics and I took time to visit every one. One stall was able to get me into a Strength and Balance exercise class the very next day and I am still attending it with beneficial results.
But it was a few weeks later that I was contacted by Nicola from North Lanarkshire Disability Forum. A meeting was arranged and I poured out my heart to her, telling her not just about myself but also all about my husband who suffers from Parkinson’s and is also a type one insulin dependent diabetic.
The thing that I find amazing is that I never once asked for help, but nevertheless help and advice was given. Nicola explained about services that were available, one of which was Assistance Allowance, something I knew nothing about. She even helped fill in the form (I could never have done it myself) and a couple of months later my husband was granted the allowance which will help to make things a little easier for us both.
We are both grateful for the help and advice from North Lanarkshire Disability Forum and are sure that there are many more people like ourselves who could benefit from similar advice. Help is out there if we know who to ask.
