"I've had only positive experiences up till this point"

About: Children and Young People Services / Health Visiting

(as a service user),

My usual health visitor was unwell so was unable to see me for my child's 9 month review. I was seen by a different health visitor who was very nice and professional.

However when it came to asking about how the feeding was going, they asked if I breastfeed my son at night and I said that I did. They said I should stop feeding him at night as it's just for comfort and he doesn't need it. If I wasn't sure of myself and my ability to breastfeed my child, this kind of comment would have been detrimental to not only my breastfeeding journey but to my son too. The way breastfeeding on demand works is you feed when the baby wants to be fed so stopping feeding him at night would cause milk supply issues and also incredibly confusing to my baby.

I've had only positive experiences up till this point with the two lovely health visitors that I have seen so they definitely deserve recognition for their hard work and support they have provided.

Hello Alexandra4,

I would like to apologies for any distress or uncertainty that you may have experienced during your recent contact with the health visiting service.

As a service we always strive to support and empower parents, so I am sorry that on this occasion that was not what you experienced. But am very pleased that you can report that your previous experiences with our health visitors was a positive one.

We take all feedback as an opportunity for learning and improving our practice. I will be linking in with the community infant feeding lead and sharing your experience, as we will take this learning back to staff. As a service we are passionate about promoting and protecting the right for every mother to breastfeed if that is her choice, and want to ensure that information that is shared is sensitive and accurate.

If you would like to speak to me please ring me at a time that is convenient for you.

Kind regards

Suzanne McLoughlin Lead nurse for health visiting
