"Dismissive and unprofessional"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Medical Assessment Unit

(as a relative),

My Mother was an in patient in Ward 2 Hairmyres. She has a Dementia diagnosis. Was experiencing what she described as electric shocks to her head, where she would grab her head, jump/jerk, feel dizzy and as if she was going to pass out. She also has a pacemaker which is checked regularly. The information from A&E wasnt correctly passed to Ward 2 staff. We did update them as a family.

A staff member asked to speak with my sister and I. They advised there was nothing wrong with my mum. That she had dementia and would be going home. We spoke on mums behalf expressing concern about pain and her presentation which wasn't normal. The staff member actually laughed, saying that she has dementia. I told them that these symptoms are nothing to do with her dementia. They said that as families we sometimes medicalise symptoms when the person has a dementia. I work with older people specialising in Dementia. I told them this. They laughed again and said I should know better.

I felt so dismissed. My mum was simply a dementia label to them. It was disgusting. They were unprofessional in every way.

I hear of these stories from my patients families all the time.  To be on the receiving end of the disgusting behaviour and have a professional laugh at me and my sister is not right.

Dear Leigh229

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I am sorry to read that staff dismissed the concerns that you were raising and that they were unprofessional in their approach. This is not the standard of care and communication that I expect to be provided and I would like to offer my sincere apologies to you and your mother.

It is essential that we listen to families who know their loved ones and understand their needs. From your comments, it is clear that we did not listen to you and work with you to understand the changes in your mothers condition.

I will share your comments with the SCN's and wider team, to reflect and learn from your feedback. If you would also be able to contact patient affairs or myself to provide more details, then I can look into the care provided to your mother in more detail.

My contact is lise.axford@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk or patientaffairs@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk

I am truly sorry to read about your experience.

Thank you for contacting

Lise
