"A Wonderful Nurse"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department Northern Ireland Ambulance Service

(as a relative),

My Mum arrived by ambulance to ED, CAH. She spent some hours in the Ambulance Triage area and then moved to the Yellow area in the middle of the night.

Mum has Dementia, Heart Disease and Diabetes (insulin dependent), has a poor diet, is unsteady on her feet (a number of falls recently), continence and personal care challenges.

In the Yellow area there was a lovely young Nurse called Chloe who was fabulous.

Chloe took her time to listen carefully to lots of queries and information about Mum's needs I felt were important to share to ensure Mum's care needs (eg medication, skincare, toileting, dietary challenges and feeding assistance needs), would be met. Chloe was patient and listened intently. Chloe actually thanked me for sharing the information as she said it would help her give Mum the best care.  I felt heard and that Mum's needs really mattered to Chloe, which reassured me.

Chloe took me through the medication on Mum's chart to alleviate a few concerns I had and provided reassurance.

I observed Chloe interacting with Mum. Chloe was so clear, kind, introducing herself properly, seeking permission for tasks to help Mum feel in control and safe. Chloe was patient and caring with Mum.

Chloe ensured Mum's skincare needs were properly met, changed her and took the time needed to support Mum taking her medication and also assisted her with eating as Mum's needs varies during the day due to her Dementia from where she can feed herself to needing complete support.  I was relieved by all of this.

Chloe also ensured Mum's notes reflected our discussion and also her experience of interacting with Mum.  Before Mum was moved again on Friday night round to the Medical Admissions Unit to help with patient flow, Chloe ensured she gave a thorough handover.

Chloe, thank you, you were fantastic. Some people do a job, but some people like you have a calling.  You demonstrate completely the Trust values and the core of what anyone would want in a Nurse. Keep up the great work. You are just wonderful.
