"Dreadful trouble with my GP practice"

About: General practices in Lothian

(as a service user),

I've had a recent hip replacement (which I have also given feedback about). I'm supposed to take Dalteparin injections into March. I only have enough to take me to this week. The District Nurse can't supply prescriptions.

I phoned the CWIC (prescriptions line) about needing the injections but was told I needed to discuss with my doctor. I'd also called CWIC team who had no appointments. I tried calling my GP to get a doctor. All I got was a recording telling me they were full before cutting me off.

It's so difficult to see a doctor so why don't they listen when you attend?

I'd managed to get a home visit earlier this week because I live upstairs so housebound. The doctor came to see me and I described the Nocturia I'm having at night. I told him how I'd been made dizzy & sick with the painkillers after the operation. So why prescribe me Detrusitol?

I can't take the Detrusitol as on of the Common side effects is dizziness, especially in those with my sensitivity.

It's costing me money each month for pads. I've asked to be referred to the Bladder & Bowel clinic. I've no idea whether that has been done. I doubt it has, I wasn't referred about my hip when I should have been which caused me so much pain & suffering.

I told the same doctor that I needed more Dalteparin but no prescription yet. I will run out soon and I can't get through to GP to get the urgent prescription that I requested.

I told the same doctor that since having the spinal anesthetic I have lost 80% of my hearing. He looked in my ears and noticed excess wax so prescribed ear drops. Now I may have excess wax; I was slightly hard of hearing before my operation. However, I could still follow general conversation though and I can't do so now.  Bit of a coincidence that I'm now almost completely deaf now surely?

I've asked to be referred to Audiology/hearing clinic. Have I? My faith in that being the case is not high, it seems to me that my GP having problems that other GPs in the area don't have. It's well overdue they got themselves sorted out. However I'm taking a risk just writing this as I believe previously when people complained they were refused access to GP.

I want and need some help now and I've no idea where to get the help to which I have a right.

Dear Cher562,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your story. I am sorry to hear about your experience with you GP practice, accessing appointments, required medication and referral to relevant services. I can see how it is leaving you frustrated and wondering where you can access help.

Unfortunately, due to the anonymous nature of Care Opinion I am unable to pass your story onto the relevant GP practice. If you wish for me to do this, can I ask you to email the NHS Lothian Patient Experience Team on LOTH.feedback@nhs.scot, referencing the Care Opinion story and which practice you belong to. I can then send the story link to the practice so they can receive your feedback.

If you wish to raise your concerns formally with your GP practice, can I advise you to speak directly to the practice manager to explore how you can raise a complaint.

I wish you all the best in being able gain the support that would benefit your health and wellness.

Kind regards,

Mariska
