I recently had a blood test carried out at my GP's . As part of it I asked for a PSA test to be included. I expected it to be normal but after recent publicity surrounding Sir Chris Hoy and somebody I knew, both talking about it, I thought better safe than sorry.
Unfortunately it came back as being high. Given other contributing factors my GP referred me to the Urology team at Monklands.
After that things moved swiftly. I received a phone call from the team offering me an appointment within the next couple of weeks.
The time passed and I found myself sitting outside the department. Given that I knew an internal examination was on the cards, to say I was a trifle anxious probably best describes my state of mind.
I must say that Lorna has a brilliant team working with her. I was treated with the utmost courtesy and completely put at my ease. A clinical support worker and a staff nurse dealt with me and I must apologise for not remembering their names. Urine sample, bladder scan, blood sample and internal exam, all explained to me and any questions or queries I had were answered. Even when I baulked at the internal, I had done well up to then, It was discussed and my fears allayed. With all the testing carried out it was explained to me what would happen next given the results. Positive or negative results both had pathways to follow, which gave me some peace of mind.
Leaving the department brought to mind how dogs must feel leaving the vets.
Lorna called me later and passed on the results, basically my prostate was good to go, and also offered me other investigations that may explain some of the other symptoms I had. Given my ongoing health concerns, I thanked her and would discuss it with my GP.
"Treated with the utmost courtesy and put at my ease"
