I was seen by a heart surgeon at UHCW at least 18 months ago after being referred by a renal specialist. The heart surgeon stated my tests had shown my mitral valve was leaking and surgery was necessary to correct the problem. The news did come as a shock to me as I believed I had not experienced any symptoms. However on reflection there were times I did become breathless but I assumed this was because my fitness levels were dipping and didn’t think it was medically related. Subsequently, I followed all guidance and advice given to me and attended all medical appointments. However, as the end of 2023 approached my symptoms, such as swelling feet, ankles, legs, breathlessness and sleepless nights, became increasingly worse. I was able to see the heart surgeon about my decreasing health and was admitted into UHCW and had surgery at the end of February 2024. Most of what took place after surgery remains much of a blur to me as I was in the complete care of the medical team on the Critical Care ward for over three weeks. From conversations with family and friends the care I received while in Critical Care was impeccable. The medical team provided an exceptional level of care and concern for me during my period of vulnerability and trauma. Visitors emphasised to me how the staff demonstrated their care, performance of their duties, their overall professionalism and their behaviour towards those who visited or phoned me with the upmost respect and diligence including being very approachable and compassionate to my needs. Additionally, my recovery was bolstered by staff when I left the Critical Care ward by ensuring I had ample and sufficient meals and drinks that aided my recovery and making every effort to make me ‘feel better’ by engaging in conversation and being patient with me. My needs were met and I felt safe being on the ward as nothing was an issue to ensure I was relaxed and confident with the care provided and the condition of the ward.
In summary The medical team (surgeon, physiotherapists, doctors, cardiac team, nurses, cleaners etc) were all knowledgeable in their roles, kind, responsive, compassionate, diligent, gentle, joyful, respectful, skillful, patient, considerate and attentive. This team of dedicated individuals helped to improve my health and build my confidence so I could be discharged home with all appropriate equipment in place. I am truly grateful and appreciate the energy given by UHCW staff to reduce the trauma my body and mind experienced during my admission. Consequently, I can say that UHCW have a great team of people they can be proud of (despite the pressures the NHS is under) who rose to face the challenges and delivered on expectations to ensure my wellness. I hope UHCW will continue to do what I have seen is the best side of health care and be fortified by its strength to provide hope and possibility. I received and witnessed the best care I could have wanted. So from me, my family and friends God bless you all.
"excellent care"
