For the past few years I have been receiving blood transfusions at the East Lothian Community Hospital. This is a community service run from Haematology at the Western.
Being diagnosed was life changing because it is very rare for someone my age to be diagnosed with this. To say it was frightening was an understatement.
The service led by Staff Nurse Hazel really supported me and allowed me to adjust and normalise the frequent transfusions as much as can be possible. Hazel and the various different nurses that supported her created a welcoming and friendly environment. Having the same staff allowed them to get to know me me which was invaluable for knowing how to cannulate me (difficult veins) and importantly managing the frequency of transfusions. Hazel was instrumental in helping me through a really difficult period by creating an environment and service that allowed me to adjust to a new way of life. I understand Hazel has left this service and wanted to ensure her line management were aware of how important she was and that she is missed.
"A welcoming and friendly environment"
