"My sister's care in Altnagelvin Hospital and Waterside hospital"

About: Critical Care / Intensive Care Unit (ICU) General and specialist medicine / Ward 22 Waterside Hospital / Physiotherapy

(as a relative),

After being admitted to Altnagelvin she had fallen twice at home I called the out of hours service and they sent the ambulance. She was moved to I.C.U. in ward 32 were she was for 2 weeks then was moved to ward 22 in Altnagelvin and I would say she received excellent care in both wards.

Then she was transferred to the Waterside Hospital without my telling me when I visited her in ward 22 that afternoon because I would have objected as it is not easy for me to get to as I have Arthritis in my feet and legs .

This now means that my sister is left sitting all afternoon without visitors until night-time. Also I feel that her care has gone backwards instead forward because she's not getting as much Physiotherapy as she did in Altnagelvin this needs to increase to improve her mobility.

The other complaint I have is I had left several messages for her Neurologist in Altnagelvin Hospital to contact me in reference to my sister being in the hospital and they didn't, which is a disgrace.

Dear Mags Dilemma,

My name is Cait Glass and I am a senior Physiotherapist in Waterside hospital. Thank you for taking the time to send us this information about your sister’s experience so far. As this is an anonymous platform I am unable to identify which ward in Waterside hospital is currently caring for your sister, however our Physiotherapy team covers both rehabilitation wards (3 and 4).

I am sorry to hear you feel your sister may not be receiving the Physiotherapy required to optimise her recover. We are experiencing staffing difficulties at present and working hard to rectify this, and am pleased to say that we are in the process of recruitment which should help greatly. We very much value your feedback as it helps to provide evidence of the real and concerning affects and implications that the restrictions have on the patients we care for and their families. In the interim, our staff are working very hard to provide the best care we can within these challenging times, and will always endeavour to keep the patient’s needs at the centre. It may be worth noting that we work collaboratively as an multi-disciplinary team to provide rehabilitation to our patients- this means that, for example, the occupational therapists and nursing staff, also provide rehabilitation and while we each have our specialist roles, this is not the sole responsibility of the Physiotherapists

I hope that this will alleviate some of your concerns, but should you have anything else you wish to discuss, or if you wish to speak directly to any of the team, please don’t hesitate to contact the Waterside Hospital on 028 7186 0007 and select or request the appropriate ward.

Best wishes,

Cait.
