"No additional advice offered"

About: Arbroath Infirmary / Minor Injuries General practices in Tayside

(as a service user),

I have always had a good experience at my GP practice but recently it has been quite bad. I have had a problem with my back & hip and in the past few weeks have been in absolute agony. I attended my GP and was told to take pain killers I asked regarding a scan but was told I didn't fit the criteria for referral. No additional advice offered.

I attended Arbroath MIU and was seen by Anne the SCN who did more and gave good advice. She gave me pain killers and advice for exercises. This helped immensely.

However in the past 1-1.5 weeks it has not improved but gotten worse, so contacted GP today and was advised to email and they could possibly re-apply for scan. I should continue with pain killers which I explained can only take Ibuprofen and wasn't helping  and Codeine was making matters worse as constipation was  making pain worse.

No discussion of anything to help with constipation and allergic to paracetamol so no advice given. This is the worst I have ever felt. Cant function on a daily basis for pain and feeling so let down by my GP.

MIU were great. Am going to have to self present at A&E as it seems the only avenue possible at the moment.

Dear Fed up of Bad care by GP's

Thank you for taking the time to post your story on Care opinion, your feedback lets us know what we can do to improve our services.

Its very reassuring to know that the advice and care you received when you attended the Minor Injury Unit in Arbroath helped immensely. The nursing staff always try to ensure that each patient is treated as an individual, and their problems and concerns are discussed and dealt with as best we can. Exercise and pain relief often resolve many types of back pain but this can take a few weeks.

I'm so sorry to hear that you are still having problems and that the exercise and pain relief, are now not helping. This must be quite debilitating for you. Most people suffer from some degree of back pain in their lifetime but the effects of this can be far reaching.

The first contact physiotherapists are often the right clinician to help and advice from. They are the experts on most muscular skeletal issues in primary care and can often help with many conditions including back and hip pain. If you have not been in touch with them recently you can call your GP practice and ask the reception staff to book you an appointment. NHS inform also have advice to help, although I'm sure you have accessed this as it was probably discussed at your appointment in Minor Injuries.

Please don't loose hope there is definitely help for you with this. Unfortunately this is unlikely to be Accident and Emergency as their skills and time are taken up dealing with patients who have life threatening issues.

Your own GP practice should be able to help so please get back in touch with them and perhaps speak to the physiotherapist there.

The staff and I in Minor Injuries wish you all the best for the future, and hope that your pain eases, and you are able to return to a better quality of life asap.

Take care

Anne

Dear Fed up of Bad care by GP's

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your General Practice (GP). Feedback is very valuable to all areas of the NHS. I am glad you had a positive experience at the Minor Injuries Unit in Arbroath and I am sorry that your experience at your GP surgery was not positive. Unfortunately, GP practices are not part of Care Opinion at this time, as each GP Practice is an independent business. So that they can see your feedback, we would recommend that you feedback your experience directly to the practice to allow this to be passed on to the staff. The Practice Manager can give you with details of how to provide this feedback to them, as per their Complaints and Feedback Policy.

Kind regards

Susan
