"Amazing service and team"

About: Community Maternity Care / East Kilbride Community Maternity Maternity Care / Day Assessment Unit Maternity Care / Labour Ward Maternity Care / Maternity Triage Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) / Transitional Care

(as a service user),

This was my first pregnancy after many years of infertility. I was surprised at how minimal input I had from the community maternity services during the first 28 weeks of the pregnancy despite my age and other risk factors. It didn't help that for most of it I didn't have a named midwife and was seen by different staff each time.

Everything changed after a complication at 31 weeks which meant my care was moved to hospital based. Since then and until delivery at 34 weeks I was closely monitored as both an inpatient and outpatient in Wishaw. I was seen regularly at the triage and day assessment and also spent several days in the antenatal ward. With the odd exception, the midwives I came across all the different parts of Wishaw were all very caring and professional.

I had a cesarean delivery which was a very positive experience.  Everyone was calm and friendly.  And I want to comment on two exceptional members of staff for that night. A student midwife who stayed with me all the way from the triage until after my baby was delivered and I was transferred to the ward.  Truly caring. The anaesthetist was also fantastic, explaining everything and talking to me at all times during the procedure.

Following the delivery my baby and I needed  to stay in the transitional baby care unit for a bit and I felt so incredibly grateful for the care we received there. All the midwives there were amazing. I don't remember all the names and it would be unfair to only mention some. They looked after us very well, they offered to help with overnight feeds when the exhaustion of 4 weeks since the complication had started was getting too much for me.  My baby received all the medical care she needed and I was given advice and support on looking after her. Amazing service and team.
