"My heart attack"

About: Golden Jubilee National Hospital / Cardiac Surgery Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Cardiac Rehabilitation Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Cardiology (Heart Conditions) Wards 6c & 6d

(as the patient),

I finished cutting my garden hedge and went indoors for a cup of coffee.

I had a pain between my shoulder blades in my back but initially thought it was just a strain. Unfortunately the pain did not go away even after relaxing and having a lie down. Eventually, after a couple of hours of pain, I asked my daughter to call 999 as I thought I was having a heart attack.

A neighbour, who was a retired GP, helped me through the next stage until the first responder arrived. He confirmed via his ECG machine that it was a heart attack with his readings being sent back to the hospital.

He was in repeated contact with a doctor and they started some mitigating treatment. shortly after an ambulance arrived and, after some more tests and treatment, they transported me to the Jubilee Hospital in Glasgow.

At the hospital a team was waiting and I was taken to a operating room where, I later learned, I had a stent fitted. I do not remember anything from arriving at the operating room until I woke up on a ward bed.

2 days later after constant monitoring /tests and being put on medication I was discharged and allowed home.. Follow up/after care has been at the QEUH with the cardiac rehab teams including Physiotherapy, Phlebotomy and Pharmacy. All of which have been excellent.

A special mention must go to the Physio team they were superb in the weeks I attended their classes.

Dear Hockeyfrank

Thank you for sharing your story, and we are glad to hear that you received the prompt care and support you needed during this time.

It was great that you acted quickly and contacted emergency services, which led to timely intervention from first responders, hospital teams, and the cardiac specialists at Jubilee Hospital. Your recovery sounds like it has been well supported by the excellent care from both the hospital staff and the cardiac rehabilitation teams at QEUH.

Heart attacks can be a life-changing experience, and it is reassuring to know that the follow-up care, including physiotherapy, phlebotomy, and pharmacy support, has been so beneficial for you. The feedback you’ve given about the Physio team highlights how important such rehabilitation can be to recovery, and we will make sure your kind words are passed along to them.

Kind regards

Kevin
